UGG Boots
UGG (or UG, or UGH) boots. Where did they come from? Who made them first? Who makes them now? Who actually owns the brand name?
Well, the Blue Mountain Ugg Boots Company in New South Wales, Australia, began making UGG (or UG, or UGH) boots back in 1933, and even before then pilots in world war 1 were using sheepskin lined boots called FUG boots. Since 1958 Mortels Sheepskin Factory have sold long ugh boots.
According to the Anglian Gardener website, ' "Ugg boot" is a generic term used in Australia for many years to describe this style of sheepskin boots.' And the Cool Antarctica website says that: "Ugg" boot is a generic term to describe shearling boots in Australia and has been used for over 20 years.
UGG (or UG, or UGH) style boots are now made by many manufacturers in Australia and New Zealand. But they can't be sold under the UGG (or UG, or UGH) name because the trademark UGG (or UG, or UGH) has been taken by an American company named Deckers Outdoor Corporation. But how can one company claim a name that has been used as a generic term for many years? It doesn't seem right! What do you reckon?
Deckers Outdoor Corporation, through another company owned by them, known as UGG Australia, which is based in the United States!, manufactures UGG (or UG, or UGH) style boots and markets them in many places around the world.
UGG (or UG, or UGH) style boots are worn by many famous people. From princesses to pop stars, right through to ordinary people like me, UGG (or UG, or UGH) style boots are worn for their comfort, warmth and style. UGG (or UG, or UGH) style boots can keep your feet warm to minus 30 degrees , which is pretty cold, you would agree. (Celsius or Fahrenheit? It doesn't matter when it gets that cold!!)
So you can rest assured that there are many manufacturers who make UGG (or UG, or UGH) style boots around the world, but only those made by UGG Australia, which is part of Deckers Outdoor Corporation, can use the name ' UGG (or UG, or UGH). Which doesn't seem right, but there you go!
Actually, there has been a further development in this story. IP Australia , the government body that controls intellectual property such as trademarks in Australia, has determined that the words UGH BOOT are not a trademark in Australia. Therefore, according to the information of the IP Australia website, anyone can now describe their sheepskin boots for sale in Australia as UGH BOOTS ! |
