The Koala
It looks like a bear, but it isn't. It is, in fact, a marsupial, like the kangaroo, though it doesn't look anything like one. It's a Koala, perhaps Australia's best loved animal.
The Koala looks cuddly - but be careful! Those claws are sharp and strong, designed to be that way so it can climb trees and hold on firmly. They are also good for giving enemies a hard time!
They can also widdle, as a Victorian government minister found out a few years ago. He was officially opening a sanctuary and decided to pick up this koala - not a wise thing to do at all, considering those sharp claws - and the koala promptly widdled all over his freshly pressed suit! Needless to say, the media were delighted!
The koala is a funny animal. It sleeps most of the day in the fork of a gum tree, and comes out only in the late afternoon and night. It usually eats only gum leaves, and then only certain types of gum leaves. It drinks only rarely, getting enough moisture from its food and from dew. |

Did you know?
The Koala, being a marsupial, carries its baby in a pouch. But there is a difference - just like the wombat, the pouch faces backwards! I don't know how the baby keeps from falling out, but there must be a good reason for it. Maybe it was designed that way to keep the rain out? |

Baby koalas stay in their mother's pouches for the first six months. after that, they ride on their mother's back for another six months. Then it takes a couple of years before they are mature and can breed, at about three to four years old.
Koalas live for about 20 years |

Just a few years (about 1995) ago my children came running home excitedly telling us that there was a koala in a tree just around the corner near our house in Belmont, a suburb of Geelong in Victoria, Australia. We found that a bit hard to believe, but, sure enough, there was the koala high up in a streetside Melaleuca tree in Mernda Parade.
We rang the local sanctuary who came and collected the koala to take it back to the bush. They reckoned it was not that uncommon in the outer suburbs, but a bit more rare in a place like Belmont.
The koala would have had to cross some major roads to get to where it was. Because koalas move at night, it would have avoided most of the traffic. |
